The Parliamentary Secretary for Agriculture and Fisheries and Animal Rights, Roderick Galdes, has said that there are now new signs at the locations marked as dog-friendly beaches, where bathers can take their dogs in Gozo and Malta.
In Gozo the dog-friendly bays are Mgarr ix-Xini and the coastal area close to Xwejni Bay
Dog-friendly bays in Malta are at, Marsaxlokk (near Hunters Towers restaurant), Marsascala Bay, Zonqor Point M’Scala, Rinella Bay (Kalkara), Sliema (near Fortina), Bahar ic-Caghaq (behind Splash and Fun complex), Imgiebah Bay (Selmun), Torri l-Abjad (near Mellieha) and L-Ahrax (Mellieha).
As previously advised by the Parliamentary Secretary, dog owners will be allowed to use these beaches, however the owners are required to keep their pets on a leash when not in the sea and must carry waste bags with them. Failing this, fines will be handed out. Monitoring is due to be carried out by local council officials and others from the Department of Health and the Animal Welfare Directorate.
It is also on the condition that they do not cause inconvenience to other bathers. Dog owners must also ensure that all mess, including possible animal excrement from the animals, is cleaned up and not left behind, bins are provided.
The water quality of the zones will be regularly monitored.
