Xewkija School grounds open for the public during summerThe school grounds of four public schools in Malta and Gozo have reopened in the summer months for parents and children to enjoy and play in within confined parameters.

In Gozo, it is the Xewkija Primary School – Fridays from 18.00 to 21.00 and Saturdays from 09.00 to 12.00.

Marigold chairperson Mrs Michelle Muscat said that parents of children with autism should not refrain from raising the issues and challenges they face on a daily basis, and this was a measure which was addressed following such discussions.

All children should be able to enjoy the summer months and play, and thanks to this initiative parents have their mind at rest that they are in the safe environment of a school ground, Mrs Muscat said.

Education Minister Evarist Bartolo said that the grounds are opened to the general public and he encouraged parents and children to take up this opportunity. He said that schools are part of the wider community and have responsibilities over and above the educational ones.

Traditional playgrounds pose a danger to children with autism since, most often than not, these are next to streets and without any barrier, leaving children with behavioural difficulties at risk. This initiative is now in its third consecutive summer and is a continuation of a similar programme during the winter months.

Mrs Muscat also presented a donation on behalf of the Marigold Foundation to the Autism Parents Association.

Locations and opening hours in Malta are as follows:

Attard Primary School – Fridays from 17.30 to 20.30, Saturdays from 14.00 to 17.00, Sundays and Public Holidays from 10.00 to 17.00;

Marsaxlokk Primary School – Fridays from 17:00 to 20.30, Saturdays from 10.00 to 17.00, Sundays and Public Holidays from 10.00 to 17.00.

Mosta Secondary (Zokrija) – Thursdays and Fridays 17.30 to 19.30.
