The Mnarja Philharmonic Band of Nadur once again entertained the public in style, with its Annual Band Concert – Big Band Adventures, at the Martin Camilleri Square, Nadur, Gozo. The band was directed by Mro. Joseph Grech.
The eleven musical pieces performed by the Mnarja Band “were of the highest standard,” the band said. Adding “that the audience who packed the square for the concert were treated to an outstanding and enjoyable evening as in previous years, which was complimented with a spectacle of light, projections, fireworks and a few surprises as well!”
The first part of the concert started with an introduction from the colossal film “Ben Hur.” A selection of themes from Moussorgsky’s “Night On Bald Mountain” and followed by Beethoven’s “Egmont Overture.” Gioacchino Rossini featured in a light-hearted rendition of William Tell’s famous theme in “The Swinging Rossini.”
The second part of the concert featured vocal arrangements of ‘Beatles in Concert’ sung by Nadur born Rebecca Bonello, Joeline Samham and Elaine Haber, while pop singer Christine Camilleri interpreted “Flash Dance . . .What A Feeling” and “Shania.”
The third and last part of the concert consisted of popular medleys and pop music, a genre that the Mnarja Band said, has introduced into its vast repertoire for the last 23 years. “This is evident in the Band’s engagement to perform concerts in practically all feasts during the festa season in Gozo.”
This last part included: a comic piece titled “Tulips from Amsterdam,” Main theme from “The Avengers,” “Rock Classics of the Seventies” and the very entertaining piece “Summer Holiday” with the participation of the audience.
This year’s concert was attended by the Minister for Gozo Dr Anton Refalo, Archpriest Mons. Jimmy Xerri, Dr Chris Said MP, Nadur’s Mayor Edward Said and Councillors, “and the largest audience ever attended for this annual concert.”
