“The Commcare service in Gozo will be strengthened immediately to bring the level into line with the same kind of service offered in Malta.”
The Parliamentary Secretary for Rights of Persons with Disability and Active Ageing Justyne Caruana, said that this service was a very limited in Gozo at the moment, however now Gozitan elderly people and persons with disability will be able to benefit from the same services that are offered Malta in their own residence,s thanks to the various carers in this sector.
Dr Caruana said that Commcare will begin to provide nursing and assessment services in Gozo, therefore the needs of Gozitan applicants will not only be identified in a holistic and professional manner, but they will be given care and other required services in their own homes, carried out according to their needs and conditions.
Dr Caruana announced this during a visit to Dar San Lawrenz, where the Government is providing new services in Gozo to the elderly via a Public Private Partnership scheme, they include long term care services and respite services. The Parliamentary Secretary also mentioned that the services being given at the San Lawrenz residence can cater for elderly couples too.
Dr Caruana said that this is an integral part of the Government’s plan to continue strengthening the services on a community basis.
She reiterated that due to the fact that Gozo enjoys a large percentage of its population being older persons, it is crucial that services are enhanced and strengthened in Gozo too.
“This will be the mission that the Parliamentary Secretariat, led by Dr Caruana, will be implementing in the coming months.”
Dr Caruana concluded by encouraging all those who are in need of a night shelter to register their interest and book for the service since this will commence in a few days.
