During a visit to Villa San Lawrenz for the elderly in Gozo, the Parliamentary Secretary for the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and Active Ageing, Justyne Caruana, officially announced a new respite service in Gozo, which will be located at the San Lawrenz home.
Dr Caruana said that as part of the Government’s strategy to address the problems related to the elderly in Gozo, it is now planning to provide services for elderly residents of the island. “It is a known fact that Gozo has a significant lack of services related to the elderly, considering that Gozo has great percentage of seniors than that of Malta.”
The Gozo respite service will begin with two beds at Villa San Lawrenz purchased through the Public-Private Partnership. The respite service may be accessed immediately through an application from www.activeageing.gov.mt or from the Department for the Elderly and Community Care.
Dr Caruana said that this is an important step in showing that the Government is committed to increase and strengthen community services for both the elderly and for the disabled. She also said that a series of new services for Gozo will be announced in the near future.
