“Saturday was a perfect day to enjoy the rugged landscape and spectacular coastlines of Gozo on foot.” Ms Mansfield, a participant in the hike added that the root was around the south-west of the island, from Qala to Xlendi, a third of the intended perimeter of Gozo, for the Gozo-Rocks Challenge Hike.
“Often the paths were flat as we walked along the Sannat cliffs, allowing us to enjoy sea views and the distant land of Malta. In other places we descended, this was quite challenging but with careful footing and a good leader there were no problems!”
Other paths ascended as we tackled the limestone rock faces which give Gozo such character, the steady pace meant that everybody was able to finish, M Mansfield said.
The first day of the Gozo-Rocks Challenge Hike, 18Km was covered in 4 hours 23 minutes. The youngest hikers were 7 and 8 year old. “Well, done to everyone. It was nice to see the Bus waiting for some young ones.”
Tuesday, the 6th of January is the second part of the hike, meeting at Marsalforn by the Calypso Hotel at 9.00am, continuing where they left off to complete the perimeter by finishing up in Qala.
There will be a bus to take hikers back to their cars, everyone is welcome to join, please wear sensible shoes, warm clothes and take food and water.
If weather permits, the third part of the hike from Xlendi to Marsalforn will take place next, Saturday, the 10th of January.
