Gozo’s Stefan Azzopardi placed 3rd in Nestle Malta International Challenge Marathon

The 2014 Nestle Malta International Challenge Marathon, described by the organisers as “The World’s Most Unique Marathon,” was held last weekend over 3 days, 3 Stages, with the exact distance of 42.195km.
Gozitan Stefan Azzopardi, aged 31 from Gharb, finished in overall 3rd place with overall time of 2:46.03. On Day one his time was, 00:41:59, Day two, 00:21:52 and Day three, 01:42:12.
Jonathan Balzan and Josann Attard Pulis were the winners of the 2014 Nestle Malta International Challenge Marathon.
On Friday the route was 11.195 km, with a target time of 1 hr 45 minutes, which started from Mdina gardens, towards Busket forest, to Dingli Cliffs returning by the Roman Villa, passing Mdina and finished in “Is-Saqqajja” Rabat.
On Saturday the route was 6 km with a target time of 1 hr, starting at St. Georges Bay, Birzebbuga, on to the centre and then out to Hal Far, back via the Freeport to Birzebbuga Church.
Sunday, the final day, the route was a gruelling 25 km, with a target time of 4 hrs 15 minutes. It started at Wignacourt Tower, St. Pauls Bay, passing The Dolmen, Kennedy Grove, Coast road, White Rocks, Pembroke Hill, St. Andrews, St. Julian’s, Sliema, Ta’ Xbiex, Pieta, Valletta Bastions and entered Republic Street at Fort Elmo finishing in Freedom and Parliament Square.
Louis Debattista of the Gozo Greyhounds Sports Club said that “Stefan is the athlete of the year for me, he is totally committed. I see him all the time training on the roads and hills around Gozo.”
