GYC welcomes investment in Gozo, but Budget does not mention a fast boat serviceThe Gozo Youth Council has expressed its satisfaction toward the investment in Gozo, outlined by the 2015 Budget.

“Firstly, by generating employment in Gozo through the recent agreement reached with international company RS2 and the development of an SME park in the Xewkija industrial zone. Secondly, with the specific employment programme targeted at part-time and full-time employees in the tourism industry, as well as the schemes tackling seasonality and ITS students,” the Gozo Youth Council said.

The Council said that it also welcomes the further investment in education and tourism through the Gozo Medical Healthcare Hub. “The Budget however, fails to refer to the Malta University Campus, which could be part and parcel of the mentioned hub, strengthening tourism and areas of expertise through education. Neither was there any reference to sports investment in Gozo or direct proposals regarding the youth.”

“The implementation of a second fibre optic cable is crucial to Gozo’s future and we urge the government to continue on these lines and to truly develop a digital hub in Gozo,” the GYC said.

It added that it “also views positively the study on Gozo’s airstrip and the preliminary works to welcome cruise liners, boosting Gozo’s international accessibility and potential touristic activities.

“Nevertheless, there has been no reference made to a fast boat service between Malta and Gozo, a project constantly proposed by local Gozitan NGOs. This lacks in optimism insecuring more efficient transport from Gozo to Malta and vice versa. Additionally, the permanent link study lacks a social study on Gozo and the precise actions that are to be taken after the studies are done.”

GYC pointed out that “too little is discussed regarding Gozo’s environment, although water conservation is of high priority and the Council largely approves of the steps the Government has taken in this regard.”

“Although infrastructure for the elderly is important, nothing was discussed regarding a youth hub in Gozo. This was a Budget proposition which has not been tackled. Gozo is definitely a lively place but will not be for long if more investment in the youth is not put in place, the Gozo Youth Council concluded.
