Talks at an advanced stage for opening of a medical school in Gozo

The President Marie-Louise Coleiro Preca visited Barts Medical School in London on Saturday, for what was described as ongoing negotiations for the opening of a Barts Medical School in Gozo.
The Minister for Energy and Health Konrad Mizzi, accompanied the President on the visit, during the meeting with the Dean and Directors of Barts, they said that the negotiations for the opening of a medical school in Gozo are at “an advanced stage.”
The President expressed her satisfaction regarding the progress of the negotiations, and explained that the Maltese Islands are the ideal place to invest because of their geographical position between the continents and because of the different cultures in Malta.
Dr Mizzi said on Saturday, that the negotiations started ten months ago following the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between the Ministry and Barts.
The Dean of Barts Medical School, Professor Anthony Warrensm said that negotiations will soon be cloncluded and that “the project will translate into wealth for Malta because Barts and The London School of Medicine and Dentistry is part of Queen Mary, University of London and is the oldest hospital in the UK, with a worldwide reputation for clinical success.”
The Government said that it is planned for the medical school to be based at the Gozo General Hospital, aimed at targeting foreign students.
Also present for this meeting was Mr Mario Galea on behalf of Malta Enterprise, and the Maltese High Commissioner to the UK, Mr. Norman Hamilton.
