Christ the Saviour statue at Marsalforn undergoing restoration workThe Minister for Gozo Dr Anton Refalo this morning visited the restoration works that started today on the statue of Christ the Saviour, which stands on a hill outside Marsalforn.

Scaffolding is being erected to enable the restoration work to get underway, including the removal and replacement of existing damaged fibreglass, especially around the head of the statue where it was damage after it was struck by a thunderbolt some years ago.

The statue will also be given a gel coating to protect the structure from the elements and thus prevent further damage.

A lighting system is also being installed that will run through photovoltaic panels, enabling the statue to be illuminated at night

The Ministry for Gozo said that the work is expected to take about a month and is being carried out by the Projects and Development Department at the Ministry.

The Minister thanked the Armed Forces of Malta, The Civil Protection Department, the Police and Wirt Ghawdex for their assistance and cooperation.

Another victory for tourism (and local logic) – surround the statue with scaffolding, mid-August.
Apparently “work” got under way immediately.
What’s the betting that it stops, any time now?
