Marigold Foundation Chairperson, Mrs Michelle Muscat, has launched an initiative allowing access to schools during the summer to help children with autism and their families.
This is a continuation of similar initiatives which help children with autism integrate within the community. The access to school grounds is open to all families. Schools in Xewkija, Gozo, and St Paul’s Bay, Marsaxlokk, Attard and Fgura in Malta, will participate in this programme.
Mrs Muscat said that parents of children with autism feel reassured when they know their children are playing within safe school playgrounds.
She said it was a hassle-free way to enjoy the outdoors which helped children feel more inclusive and parents also felt supported.
Although the aim of this initiative is to help children with autism, the school grounds will be available for use by everyone. The initiative of opening school grounds was welcomed by the members of the Autism Parents Association.
The Gozo College Principal, Mr Victor Galea, said that it was important that Gozitan children with autism could make use of such spaces at Xewkija Primary. Moreover, schools across Gozo should make a greater effort to raise awareness about autism, so that more people would understand the challenges faced.
Children and their families can access the following school playgrounds during the following hours:
Xewkija Primary Fridays 6pm to 9pm and Saturdays 9am to noon
St Paul’s Bay Primary Fridays 6pm to 9pm and Saturdays 9am till noon
Attard Primary and Marsaxlokk Primary Fridays 6pm to 9pm, Saturdays 6pm to 9pm, Sundays and Public Holidays 9am to noon
