Sette Giugno commemoration ceremony & monument inaugurationA commemoration ceremony for the Maltese victims of the 7th of June 1919 Sette Giugno riots, was held in Xaghra this morning. One of these victims was Guzeppi Bajada, who was born in Xaghra.

The event was organised by the Committee for National and Regional Celebrations, together with the Department of Culture within the Ministry for Gozo, in collaboration with the Xaghra Local Council.Sette Giugno commemoration ceremony & monument inaugurationA Celebration of Holy Mass took place at the Xaghra Basilica and Collegiate Church, led by Xaghra Archpriest Mgr Carmelo Refalo and animated by organist Ivan Attard, with the participation of children from Xaghra Primary School.

A commemorative ceremony was held in front of Guzeppi Bajada’s monument in Bullara Street, when the Last Post and the Reveille was played, followed by the laying of wreaths by the various distinguished guests in front of the monument.Sette Giugno commemoration ceremony & monument inaugurationThis was followed by the official inauguration of a monument placed in the Villa Rundle Gardens, Victoria, commemorating the victims and all Gozitans who were involved in the events which led to the Sette Giugno riots.

The monument was inaugurated by H.L. Mgr Dr. Joe Vella Gauci, Ambassador and Permanent Delegate to Malta for UNESCO and President of the Committee for National and Regional Celebrations.
