During a whistlestop tour of Gozo conducted by MEP election candidate Alfred Sant yesterday, a theme that recurred in discussions concerned the need for a new large scale project to be launched in Gozo in order to create economic momentum.
During the tour, which covered Qala, Nadur, Xaghra, Marsalforn, Victoria, Sannat and Xewkija, Dr. Sant explained that together with his advisors, he was interested in obtaining up to date information about Gozo’s current state of development.
He said that some form of regional status for Gozo could unblock decisions that were taking too long to be finalised, which is inhibiting new investment and the creation of jobs. For instance, it was quite clear that Gozo would benefit enormously from the building of a new yacht marina, yet the EU is still unwilling to recognize Gozo as a region.
The former Prime Minister went on to say that having Gozo as a region would enable Gozitans to decide for themselves when, where and how new projects could be launched.
Later on in the coming week, based on the information acquired, Dr. Sant said that he intended to write a personal letter to all Gozitan householders outlining his views on how Gozo’s economy could be given support by European institutions.
