Ghaqda Drammatika Ghajnsielem, in collaboration with the Ghajnsielem Local Council and Fort Chambray Limited, will be presenting a dramatised version of The Way of the Cross entitled ‘I Was There’ (Kont Hemm).
‘I Was There’ is a dramatic Way of the Cross, based on John Paul II’s Scriptural Way of the Cross, first prayed by the Pope on March 29, 1991. Beginning in the Garden of Gethsemane and concluding at the tomb, each station focuses on a scriptural person who delivers a monologue using the characters of the stations as mirrors in which we recognise ourselves.
The main characters include Jesus, the apostle John, the Centurion, Mary Magdalene as well as others. These reflective monologues focus on the story of the holy week, some aspects of which, are still relevant today. The Stations of the Cross will commence in Lourdes Street and will proceed through the historical site of Fort Chambray followed by the audience.
Ghaqda Drammatika Ghajnsielem was established in 1987 with the principal aim of producing activities connected with the Holy Week, with the main activity always being an original passion play. This year the group decided to create an innovative reenactment of the Way of the Cross around the outskirts of Ghajnsielem.
JoAnne Debrincat, the scriptwriter and director of this group, will be presenting the dramatisation of The Way of the Cross with a cast of around 40 actors as well as various people involved backstage including Franco Ciangura who is responsible for the artistic direction.
‘I Was There’ (Kont Hemm) will take place on Sunday, the 13th of April 2014 starting from Lourdes Street, Ghajnsielem, Gozo at 6.00pm. Entrance is free. Everyone is warmly invited to attend this special event.
Another activity which Ghaqda Drammatika Ghajnsielem organises every year is the procession of Our Lady of Sorrows, where around 90 personages are dressed as biblical characters. This activity will take place on 11th April 2014 where the procession leaves the Ghajnsielem Parish church at 6.30pm and continues throughout the various streets of the village.
In addition, this year Ghaqda Drammatika Ghajnsielem will also be organising a live reenactment of the Last Supper at Ta’ Passi fields where the Bethlehem f`Ghajnsielem activity is usually held. This activity will take place on Holy Thursday evening, 17th April 2014 and the following morning, Good Friday, 18th April 2014.
