Exhibition of historical documents in Victoria

The National Archives Gozo Section has been holding an exhibition entitled Religious Aspects of Life in Gozo, in which a selection of 30 important documents and photographs are being displayed.

These documents, obtained from several of the 25 entities whose records are deposited at the National Archives Gozo Section, show several aspects of the religious history and heritage of Gozo.

Covering the period from 1575 to 1965, the exhibits include, the 16th century report of the apostolic visitor Pietro Dusina who was appointed by Pope Gregory XIII as Inquisitor and Apostolic Delegate in Malta; panegyrics in honour of Saint George Martyr and Saints Facond and Fortunato and a number of photographs, taken before World War II, of local parishes and churches.

In a speech, Gozo Minister Giovanna Debono said that exhibitions of this type constituted an important element in the cultural, educational and social aspects of life on Gozo because they were aimed at generating more awareness of the history of the island from different perspectives.

She said that the National Archives Gozo Section has an important role to play, further enhanced through the new legislation passed through Parliament last year. Minister Debono said that the Gozo Ministry continues to dedicate funds towards the National Archives Gozo Section and, as from today, will include information about the section in the Ministry?s website at www.gozo.gov.mt

Attending the exhibition inauguration were National Archivist Charles J. Farrugia and officer in charge of the Gozo Public Libraries George Borg.

Dr. Victoria Borg, a Gozitan living in Australia, presented to the Library her thesis, “Life Satisfaction Adolescents”, a cross-cultural study in Malta and Australia.

There was also another presentation by Fr. George Mercieca. He presented to the Library some copies of his last published poetry book “L-Ghanja tac-Cinju”

Archives Awareness Week ends today. The exhibition Religious Aspects of Life in Gozo will be open to the public until Thursday, 30 November, from Monday to Saturday 7.30am to 1pm and on Wednesdays until 6pm.
