On Saturday evening the centre of Gozo’s capital city, was transformed into a glamorous arena where Gozo’s carnival parade was organised for the first time, with streets lined with many hundreds of people
The parade started with the sounds of heavy beating of distant drums and a colourful mirage of lights set up all along Republic Street while featuring the rousing singing of the Carnival anthem by the Gozitan guest choir ‘Piccole Stelle.’A beautiful maroon vintage car followed the choir which hosted the float of the King of Carnival entitled ‘Ir-Re u Regina tal-Karnival flimkien mal-Princep.’
Grotesque masks, carnival floats, and innovative costumes filled the main streets of Victoria. As the parade graduated along the main street the colourful groups performed well choreographed routines adding more enthusiasm and fun to the delight of the large numbers of people who packed Republic street.
An unexpected feature in this parade were two old Gozitan buses full of youngsters throwing sweets and balloons to the younger generation in attendance.
The parade was organised by the Ministry for Gozo under the artistic direction of Felix Busuttil.
The parade formed part of the Gozo Regional Carnival Programme 2014 which is organised by the National and Regional Celebrations Committee and the Culture Office within the Ministry for Gozo.
