We need to watch out against more one size fits all policies, says Sant

Former Prime Minister and MEP Candidate Alfred Sant said that “in the coming years, extensive changes could be happening in the European Union which will raise both threats and opportunities to Maltese society. They will cover issues relating to the government budget, taxation, industry and enivornment, as well as immigration.”
Sant, speaking at a social activity in Qawra, said there will be pressures for more decisions to be taken centrally, especially in the eurozone. “We need to watch out against more one size fits all policies,” stressed Dr. Sant.
He added, “Malta will need to monitor developments on an ongoing basis taking into account all the time how they will affect our economy and society. This needs to happen not only at governmental level but also at the levels of the EU Commission, the European Parliament and also the fora where civil society is constituted on a European basis.”
“At all these levels, the participants standing for Maltese interests have to coordinate between them to ensure a maximum positive effect when Malta is lobbying to achieve national targets,” Alfred Sant said.
“There is no longer any reason, if there ever were,” said Alfred Sant, “for Maltese representatives to be servile while assuming that all that the EU proposes is going to eventually turn out right for Malta. This has happened too often in the past, with negative consequences.”
A spirit of constructive realism should prevail without letting the stars get in out eyes as we set out Malta’s goals and requests, Alfred Sant concluded.
