Police street patrols carried out in Malta on New Year's EveMalta Police said that Protective Services Police from the Traffic Branch, the ALE and the Dogs Section patrolled the streets in Malta during the night between December 31st, 2013 and January 1st, 2014.

The Police said that “spot checks were carried out as outlined by Law.” During the inspections 1 breathalyzer test resulted positive. Traffic offense tickets were issued for not wearing safety belts, for not having an insurance cover and a license, for using a mobile phone while driving and driving over red lights.

Several other drivers were stopped and checked with no irregularities reported.

In Paceville, the Drug Squad Police arrested 31 persons during an operation which took place last night.

The persons arrested are aged between 17 and 38 years and reside in Siggiewi, Santa Venera, Qormi, Zejtun, Luqa, Zurrieq, Birzebbugia, Mosta, Naxxar, Marsascala, Isla, Zabbar, San Gwann, Zebbug (Malta), Taxien and Valletta. A 20-year-old female was also arrested.

The Police said that they were found in possession of cocaine, ecstasy (MDMA), cannabis, amphetamin and mephedrone.

Five of the persons arrested are being investigated for trafficking cocaine, ecstasy (MDMA), and amphetamine.

Police investigations are ongoing. The persons will be arraigned in Court in the following days.
