Gozitan Sports Aid Scheme launched - Assistance in travel expenses to MaltaThe launch of the Gozitan Sports Aid Scheme, whereby Gozitan clubs will receive financial assistance to cover part of the travel expenses to Malta to participate in sports competitions.

The scheme was announced by the Parliamentary Secretary for Research, Innovation, Youth and Sport, Dr Stefan Buontemp during a press conference held at the Gozo Stadium, in the presence of the Minister for Gozo, Dr Anton Refalo, together with representatives of the clubs.

The Parliamentary Secretary said that annoucement of the scheme “fulfils yet another election manifesto promise” with the aim to reduce the travel costs that people have to pay to compete in sporting activities in Malta.

As well as football and waterpolo, there are many other disciplines such as rugby, softball and athletics among others, which can benefit from the scheme, no sports played in Gozo should feel that they are excluded from competing in competitions in Malta due to extra financial costs, the Parliamentary Secretary said.

Dr Buontempo also said that “as from next year the scheme will be extended to individuals in Gozo practicing sport in Malta and through this scheme we will be giving more opportunities to Gozitans to take part in competitions in Malta.”

He added that the Maltese Government is preparing other schemes which will also be beneficial for athletes in Gozo.

Dr Stefan Buontempo and Dr Anton Refalo Minister distributed financial assistance to various sports clubs that competed in sport in Malta during January to June 2013.
