We are all One (WAAO), the newly founded NGO in Gozo, realised its first official event on Saturday, by cleaning up the Wied ta’ Zejta valley waters between Victoria and Xaghra from its plastic waste.
As the afternoon’s weather cleared up, it was made possible for the team to start their task, who were made-up from members of WAAO, members of other organisations such as the Gozo University Group and Youth for the Environment (T4TE), as well as Gozo Adventures’ team who provided the kayaks for the expedition and some volunteers.“This clean-up was a success in as much as the waste was recovered from the water. But the real achievement would be to make people more responsible,” WAAO said.
The NGO added, “the tourism industry is hindered by the lack of environmental concern, and foreigners can be deceived by seeing garbage in such beautiful places. It is a shame that most times, it is foreign people who are more conscious of Gozo’s cleanliness. We are sending a message to Gozo, to enrich its people and make this place more appealing to locals and foreigners alike. Let’s be an example.” “We must thank the Ministry for Gozo who helped us in many ways, including the transportation of the waste once recovered and also thank our financial aids, coming from a number of private businesses such as Mojo’s and The Boathouse, who also believe in Gozo’s clean environment,” WAAO concluded.
