Xaghra Parish, in conjunction with Xaghra Local Council commemorated the two Great Sieges of Malta of 1565 and 1943, during a ceremony held on Saturday.
A Solemn Thanksgiving Mass led by Archpriest Carmelo Refalo, started the morning’s ceremony, which was followed by a speech of introduction by Xaghra Mayor Joe Cordina.A re-enactment with the participation of, locals by the Xaghra Historical Re-enactment Organisation, which included the triumphal entry of Grandmaster Jean Parisot de la Valette and the proclamation of the 8th September as a National Holiday in Malta. There was also a reenactment of the 1814 plague.A speech was given by Archpriest Mgr Carmelo Refalo. The Malta Police Band performed band march and drills during the morning’s ceremony, concluding with the Last Post, a minutes silence and the playing of the Reveille.
The laying of wreaths in the front of the Great Siege monument which was temporarily set up in Victory Square, followed by the National Anthem, concluded the morning’s commemorative ceremony.
The Minister for Gozo, Dr Anton Refalo was present for the event.The weekend festivities for our Lady of Victories Feast continued on Saturday afternoon with the traditional horse races, followed by a band march around the streets of Xaghra.
