The extenstive work on the restoration and rehabilitation of the Citadella is well underway, with vistors to the Citadella, both local and tourists, having the opportuntiy to see some of the experts at work.
The Parliamentary Secretary for the EU Presidency 2017 and EU funds Dr. Ian Borg, visited the ongoing work in August, when he was able to view work on the Cathedral facade restoration, which is also identified in the Cittadella Masterplan (a policy document for the protection and management of this site).
Among the interventions planned in this project is the restoration and conversion of a historical unused reservoir into a state-of-the-art visitors’ centre which would provide the much required interpretation and ancillary facilities for visitors, the rehabilitation and restoration of Cathedral Square and the upgrading of the access road leading to it.
There will also be landscaping and rehabilitation works in the ditch, installation of floodlighting and low level street and building lighting and the installation of signage, outdoor furniture and railings.
The restoration of facades of important public buildings within the Citadel is due to be carried out, including the Gozo Law Courts, Governor’s Palace and Old Prisons and the trenching works for services inside the Cittadella which include the repaving of all the streets and walkways, which will increase accessibility for all to most parts of the site.
St Michael’s bastions has also undergone extensive restoration work.
Wirt Ghawdex, under the NGOs scheme, has alteady completed restoration work on several areas within the Cittadella, including the tunnels, shelters, grain silos and the gunpowder magazine.
