Leone Jubilee Concert lights up Republic street in Victoria

Gozo’s Leone Band 150th anniversary was celebrated with the ‘Leone150,’ the Jubilee Concert, held in Republic Street, Victoria, in front of the Aurora Opera House.
The gala concert featured the Leone Band led by Colin Attard, Maltese tenor Charles Vincenti, baritone Alfred Camilleri and pop singers Pamela Bezzina and Mario Caruana. It celebrated the 100 years of the great cantata hymn of Santa Marija, composed in 1913 by Orlando Crescimanno, affectionately known as Una Gloria, as well as the Leone Band’s own sesquicentenary (150 years).
The Programme ranged from classical opera to contemporary music and took the audience on a 150-year-long musical journey, ending with spectacular evergreen classics.
Present for the occasion were the Minister for Gozo Dr Anton Refalo and Mrs Refalo and HL Mgr Mario Grech, Bishop of Gozo among others.
The pyrotechnical show, synchronized with live music, thrilled the large audience made up of both locals and tourists.
Following the concert their was an exchange of mementos by the Leone Society and various bands that is has close relationships with. The Bishop of Gozo blessed the memorial plaque to commemorate the occasion, which was unvieled by the President of the Society, Dr Michael Caruana. in the foyer of the Leone Band Club.
