Since its foundation, the Gozo University Group said that it has expanded “to become more useful and flexible. It has become the sole voice for Gozitan youths, students on campus and on a regional and national level, doing its best to work for their interest and safeguard their rights.”
The Group said it tries to cater for the particular problems and needs which students may encounter. “Nowadays GUG has over 1,000 members in the main educational institutions, the University of Malta, MCAST, ITS and the 6th form in Gozo.”
The series of meetings with the authorities continued on Wednesday, when GUG met with Minister Helena Dalli to put forward proposals to be presented to the MCESD.
The proposals included the urgent introduction of the fast ferry service and the air link, as well as the change in the X1 Route. GUG emphasised the need of a regional office of the NSO and also the formation of the brand of Gozo, which is essential but it is also important to attract to the island of Gozo but young people. Gozo should have brand that reflects it values and attributes.
With regards to Student Guidance, GUG said that the improvement is vital, thus it suggested to have a Career Center in Gozo that would showcase the various careers that one could take not only in Malta but also on a European level. Furthermore, an employment index for Gozo is to be established to indicate the possible employment opportunities in Gozo.
GUG said that the Gozo Campus has a considerable potential to develop, the Group put forward, the model of the Valetta campus that can be followed, which means that the Gozo campus would offer international courses in collaboration with other Universities, thus having international students attending the Gozo campus during the week and such students would be balancing the situation of Gozitan students studying and living in Malta during the week.
GUG thanked the Minister for the meeting and emphasised the urgent need of the implementation for such proposals.
