Celebrations for the feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin, also known as Santa Marija, started in Victoria today.
This year also marks the 150th anniversary since the foundation of the Leone Philharmonic Society and celebrations gor underway for the occasion last year.
Today’s celebration started with a band march by the Leone Band from the Parish Centre to the Cathedral, this was followed by the Mass with the Archpriest Mgr Joseph Attard and animated by Mario Caruana.
The statue of Santa Marija was then taken from the niche, with the participation of the Leone Band. Fr George Mercieca read a poem for the occasion ‘Harist f’Ghajnejk.’
This evening the tradition Feast dinner, organised by the Leone Philharmonic Society will take place in Savina Square.
The actual feast day of Santa Marija is on the 15th of August, a National Holiday and is also celebrated in seven villages in Malta, Attard, Dingli, Ghaxaq, Gudja, Mosta, Mqabba and Qrendi.
Gozo’s Leone Band 150th anniversary celebrations continue next Friday, the 9th of August, when they will be performing ‘Leone150,’ the Jubilee Concert, in Republic Street, Victoria, in front of the Aurora Opera House starting at 9.00pm.
The Programme for the evening will range from classical opera to contemporary music, the concert will take the audience on a 150-years-long musical journey, ending with spectacular evergreen classics.
This will be a gala concert featuring the Leone Band led by Colin Attard, Maltese tenor Charles Vincenti, baritone Alfred Camilleri and pop singers Pamela Bezzina and Mario Caruana.
The event will celebrate the 100 years of the great cantata hymn of Santa Marija, composed in 1913 by Orlando Crescimanno, affectionately known as Una Gloria, as well as the Leone Band’s own sesquicentenary (150 years).
The Society said that this will be first time a pyrotechnical show, synchronized with live music, has been produced in Gozo, as the Leone Band premieres Jubilee Spectacular, a medley for band and fireworks.
Seating is free of charge, but reservations are highly recommended on 21562974, firstname.lastname@example.org or at the Leone Band Club.
