Watch St. Lawrence’s Tears from the Mgarr ix-Xini TowerAugust is the perfect time to watch the meteor shower, locally also known as St. Lawrence’s Tears. This spectacle of shooting stars is best seen late at night from a place where there is little light pollution and when there is a new moon.

What better place to watch than sitting in the peaceful surroundings of the Mgarr ix-Xini Tower in Gozo? For this purpose, Wirt Ghawdex are making the Tower and the surrounding area available for those interested in spending an evening relaxing and watching the meteors in the night sky on Friday, the 9th of August from 7.30pm onwards.

Starting at 8:00pm, a central BBQ fire will be started, supervised by a Wirt Ghawdex member, for anyone who would like to bring something to barbeque and eat while there. (Fire will be ready for cooking around 8:30pm). Please note that no other fires/BBQ’s will be allowed.

For those who would like to add a bit more to the experience, Wirt Ghawdex said that you are welcome to bring along a sleeping bag and sleep inside the tower for the rest of the night (also supervised by a Wirt Ghawdex member).

This activity is free for members as an appreciative ‘thank you’ for their support. A small donation from non-members would be greatly appreciated (can be left at the tower).

For those who are interested in joining in the event, please send an e-mail to membership@wirtghawdex.org and let them know how many will be in the group and how many would like to sleep at the tower.

Please advise Wirt Ghawdex of numbers by no later than Sunday, the 4th of August.

Additional information:

Please note that parts of the road/track to get to the tower are not in very good shape and need to be driven over with care Toilet facilities will be available on site. Wear flat and comfortable shoes since the terrain around the tower is uneven Take a torch light. Take a folding chair. (more comfortable than sitting on stone walls).
