St George’s Feast was celebrated in Victoria last weekend and on Sunday morning, His Beatitude Ignatius Youssef III Younan, Catholic Patriarch of Antioch and all the East of the Syrian, concelebrated with Bishop Mgr Mario Grech at the Pontifical High Mass.
At the end of Mass, Archpriest Mgr Pawlu Cardona presented a small copy of Mattia Preti’s titular altarpiece to Dr George Abela, on the occasion of his last year as President of Malta.
In a short message, Dr Abela reassured those present that this will certainly not be his last visit to St George’s Basilica.
Mgr Cardona also addressed His Beatitude the Patriarch and presented him with a sum of money collected from among the parishioners in aid of the Church in Syria and Lebanon, which is, in the Patriarch’s own words pronounced on Lehen il-Belt Victoria, “a Church of martyrs.” His Beatitude then led the Second Pontifical Vespers and the Procession.
