ALIVE 2013 cyclists receive a warm welcome at Dar MaltaMalta Airport ALIVE 2013 Cycling Challenge for Cancer is well underway when forty cyclists will be covering an endurance route of 720km by cycling from London to Brussels to Paris. They started on the 19th and will complete the challenge on the 26th of July. The group will cycle an average of 120 km every day for 6 days.

On Monday, the 22nd of July, the group cycled 105Km from Brugge to Brussels. Less than hour out of Brussels the cyclists reported that they were plagued with technical faults. 4 punctures, broken spokes, broken bottom bracket the cylinder with the bearings in between the pedals). However, despite the difficulties the team finally arrived in Brussels.

They were given a very warm welcome at Dar Malta by Claudette Abela Baldacchino MEP, the Minister for Foreign Affairs George Vella, Commissioner Tonio Borg, Vanessa Fraiser Ambassador, Helen Muscat of Action for Breast Cancer Foundation and Anne Stauffer from Health Alliance and Environment. The team were also presented with a donation

Dar Malta in Brussels is used as the offices of the Maltese representation to the EU and as the Maltese embassy in Brussels.

Three of the forty cyclists taking part in this cycling challenge come from Gozo, Louis Debattista of the Gozo-Greyhounds Youth Athletic Club in Qala, Gerald Abela from Victoria and Josef Vella from Nadur. The three Gozitans trained almost every day to get ready for the 720Km challenge.

The raised funds will go towards breast cancer research projects funded by the University’s Research, Innovation and Development Trust (RIDT).

ALIVE is a non-profit making organisation which has taken up the commitment of supporting charities by organising diverse fund raising events. Most of ALIVE members are passionate cyclists and each will aim to raise a minimum of €1,800 for this fund.

On the first two days of cycling the team travelled from London to Dover (121 km) and then Calais to Brugge (121 km)

The remaining days for the Challenge are as follows:

Tuesday Day 5 – Cycling: Brussels to Arras (145 km)

Wednesday Day 6 – Cycling: Arras to Beauvais (130 km)

Thursday Day 7 – Cycling: Beauvais to Paris (98 km)

Friday Day 8 – Return to Malta.
