The BOV Volleyball Marathon, 53 hours of continuous play in aid of Id-Dar tal-Providenza, is being held between Friday, the 5th and Sunday, the 7th of July 2013.
The Marathon was officially launched during a press conference addressed by Fr. Martin Micallef, Director at Dar tal-Providenza, Elvia George, Chief Officer Finance at Bank of Valletta, and Manuel Zammit Chairperson for Volleyball Marathon Organising Committee.
The aim of the Marathon is to collect funds for Id-Dar tal-Providenza, the Church-run home that offers a ‘family atmosphere’ to persons with disability who live at the Home, and provide respite services to families of persons with disability.
“This is the third consecutive year that Bank of Valletta has signed up as the main sponsor of the volleyball marathon in aid of Id-Dar tal-Providenza,”said Elvia George. ‘This event forms part of BOV’s community programme which overall invests over one million euro per year in various community projects.
Sports is one of the seven pillars of the Bank’s Corporate Social Responsibility programme. Through the BOV Volleyball marathon we want to encourage a healthy lifestyle while helping to raise funds for Id-Dar tal-Providenza to enable it to continue in carrying out the very important role it plays within the Maltese society,” added Ms George.
“Three and a half million euro per year are required for the running of Id-Dar tal-Providenza, which is built on faith in Divine Providence. The Home relies entirely on the generosity of its benefactors and the public donations it receives to fund the very high level of ‘care’ its residents need in order to support them towards their eventual integration into society.
“The purpose of the marathon is to raise funds so that Id-Dar tal-Providenza keeps striving for the improvement of the quality of life, the holistic development and social inclusion of service-users,” said Fr Martin Micallef, Director at Dar Tal Providenza.
“Training for the marathon is in full swing with 40 players from a total of around 200 volunteers working around the clock to ensure that this event is a success,” said Mr Zammit. “We are inviting the public to come over to Id-Dar tal-Providenza to encourage the players who will keep on playing in the sweltering heat and also during the night for such a worthy cause.”
