President George Abela was presented with the first ever comprehensive scientific manual on local Marine Protected Areas (MPA’s) by Dr. Alan Deidun in commemoration of the EU’s Maritime Day (21st May), the International Day for Biodiversity (22nd May) and in view of the upcoming World Environment Day commemoration (5th June) next week.
The two local MPA’s of Dwejra and Rdum Majjiesa are featured within the manual, which was co-authored in English and Italian by Dr. Alan Deidun and by co-workers Adam Gauci and Marija Attard at the IOI-MOC at the University of Malta.
Educational brochures on marine habitats and species, underwater documentaries and postcards were also developed within the same PANACEA project and were also presented to President Abela.
Within the same project, the first ever marine environmental education centre was opened at Dwejra.
The manual makes it accessible to laymen, sea enthusiasts and researchers alike and gives a kaleidoscopic overview of the submerged assets endowing the two MPA’s.
The manual and the rest of the informational material on local MPA’s was developed within the ambit of the PANACEA project, funded under the Italia-Malta 2007-2013 Operational Programme, within which both the University of Malta and the San Lawrenz local council are partners.
