72-year old man dies in incident at Gozo psychiatric ward

The Gozo General Hospital, which now comes under the Ministry for Health in Malta, was visited this morning by the Minister for Health, Dr Godfrey Farrugia. In the previous administration the Hospital was under the responsibility of the Ministry for Gozo.
During the visit Dr Farrugia spoke about an incident that had occured early on Friday morning in the psychiatric ward, when a 72-year old man had died after being allegedly pushed by another patient, he said said that this was an extremely unfortunate incident that took place between two vunerable people. The police were immediately informed of the incident and an investigation is ongoing. The Minister said that the Health Authorities would also be carrying out its own similar investigations. He confirmed that the psychiatric ward was staffed and supervised at the time it had happened
The Minister was accompanied on the visit by the Minister fo Gozo, Anton Refalo and the Parliamentary Secretary for the Rights of Persons with Disability and Active Ageing, Franco Mercieca.
Dr Farrugia said that with healthcare given in the Gozo Hospital now under the Health Ministry it would streamline and improve the services available. The provision of chemotherapy treatment for cancer patients at the hospital, to avoid the trauma of the journey to Malta was a top priority, the Minister said.
