In a visit to the nature reserve in Xemxija, Michael Briguglio, Alternattiva Demokratika – The Green Party Chairperson said, “AD reaffirms its position against spring hunting and in favour of increasing enforcement. Irrespective to all the rhetoric on nature protection both PN and PL accommodate the hunting lobby at all costs.
“Whilst both promise spring hunting, PL is now even promising to allow bird trapping following the agreement reached between the party and FKNK. As an EU member state Malta is obliged to adhere with the Birds Directive and such irresponsible behaviour by both PL and PN is unacceptable.”
“On the contrary, in parliament AD will make sure that the Birds Directive will be fully respected including not permitting spring hunting and trapping,” Michael Briguglio continued.
“AD will also work towards the promotion of eco-tourism incorporating bird watching which will serve as a boost for the tourism sector. Spring migration is a great opportunity for birdwatchers particularly those interested in birds of prey.
Michael Briguglio concluded, “instead both PL and PN are contributing towards promoting our country as a bird slaughtering nation thus deterring a number of prospective visitors. This was even confirmed lately by outgoing German Ambassador Hubert Ziegler.”
