Support for Teatru Astra

The Vodafone Malta Foundation has contributed towards Teatru Astra’s main theatrical curtain.

After having suffered extensive damages during a fire almost three years ago, restoration work has been completed and this theatrical curtain signifies a step forward for the newly refurbished theatre.

When the fire broke out at the front of the stage, both stage and auditorium were extensively damaged. Following the initial surveys and consultations, it became evident that the whole auditorium required intensive interventions, both at structural and decorative levels.

Therefore it was decided that instead of simply repairing the damage, the whole theatre would be renovated in order to modernise it, render it more amenable to modern work practices and technology and rectify limitations in the original plan. This renovation project brought about a very important change for Teatru Astra. The new theatre is also equipped with a new cinema screen.

Teatru Astra has always striven to offer opportunities to local talented young people. The theatre highest pride in this regard is its relationship with internationally acclaimed Maltese tenor Joseph Calleja.

It was actually Teatru Astra which first offered this singer a leading role in the opera Macbeth in 1997.
