Over thirty Gozitan wordsmiths have now joined together to form a broadly based writers group with the intriguing title of ‘Gozo Live’ – performance writers society. The group held their first meeting last year.
Through the support of the Ministry for Gozo, ‘Gozo Live’ aims to bring local creative writing in all forms to the public through regular open meetings of story tellers in all genres from authors of novels and short prose, playwrights and poets, to song writer/musicians and comedians.
The group holds informal performance meetings are held on the third Wednesday evening of every month at the Gozo Arts & Culture Centre in the Citadella, Victoria, Gozo. Non writers, readers and people associated with publishing and promoting the work of Gozitan/Maltese writers are warmly welcomed.
The group particularly encourages budding young Gozitan writers who wish to develop their literary skills in time for Malta’s forthcoming year as the European Centre of Culture in 2018. It is hoped that a mentoring programme will be established for high school and college graduates to improve their literary skills and take their place as creative writers for the future.
‘Gozo Live’ intends to hopefully, in the future be able to organise public performances in various venues around the island, for example parks, public gardens and village piazzas. Works can be written and performed in both Maltese and English language. It is hoped to revise the spirit of the great Gozitan and Maltese public performers of the past and to bring the works of today’s writers to public notice.
