Gozo needs specific niches – Alternattiva Demokratika

Alternattiva Demokratika has called on the government to make available funds to market Gozo as a retirement island for expatriates.

AD tourism spokesman Edward Fenech told a press conference yesterday: “While a good number of expatriates already live here, a lot more could be done to attract foreigners to retire in Gozo.”

“Their presence solidly addresses the seasonality problem. This is a niche that has never been properly recognised and professionally targeted.”

Mr Fenech said, however, that apart from funds, more effort had to be made to put a stop to the rampant development that is ruining the island.

AD chairman Harry Vassallo accused the government of neglecting the island. “We have witnessed the unfortunate closure of a number of hotels in all three, four and five star categories.

“The government’s only reaction to this situation is the excuse of restructuring that clearly shows there is no serious strategic thinking on how to boost tourism in Gozo. The opposition criticises but does not propose. The Greens are proposing,” he said.

Mr Fenech said: “The government and the opposition are caught up in the mistaken belief that undertaking massive infrastructural projects will save the island.

“What Gozo needs is development that will differentiate the island from Malta. Specific niches like those of agro, trekking and eco tourism can bring a new type of visitor to the island.”
