Illegal hunting of protected species continues

Illegally shot Night Heron Following it’s statement on Saturday, BirdLife has reported that the illegal hunting of protected species is still continuing.

The adult Night Heron shown here, which species is a common migrant over the Maltese Islands, was received by BirdLife Malta from the Police and suffered serious gunshot wounds to the head and beak.

The Night Heron (Maltese – Kwakka) is a protected species under Annex 1 of the Birds Directive and is a species of Conservation Concern in Europe due to declining populations.

With the ALE currently being deployed in limited numbers to prevent wildlife crimes, poachers are continuing to target protected species.
