Arnold Cassola, Chairperson of Alternattiva Demokratika, has called on the Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi to ensure that the thousands of resident Non-Maltese EU citizens, not presently registered to vote, be given their EU right to do so in Malta and Gozo in time for the European Parliamentary elections, due in eleven months from now.
“Unfortunately, it seems that the Maltese and Gozitan electoral offices are not being pro-active in enrolling Non-Maltese EU residents in the electoral register for the European Parliament elections.
For example, comparative scrutiny of the respective October 2007 electoral registers reveals that in the locality of Saint Paul’s Bay, whereas 2909 Non-Maltese EU citizens are enrolled in the local council register, only 113 are likewise enrolled in the European Parliament one.”
Stephen Cachia, Green Party Deputy Chairperson and Spokesperson for Democratic Institutions and Civil Rights, stated; “This anomaly is compounded at present because most resident Non-Maltese EU citizens, like many Maltese, have expired identity cards. Unfortunately, no dates have been set for the renewal of ID cards and this is not expected to be started before sometime in 2009.”
“Given that the deadline for enrolment in the European Parliament electoral register to be eligible to vote in the European Parliament elections next year is late February / early March 2009, the Electoral Commission should immediately send a letter to every single resident Non-Maltese EU citizen already enrolled on the local council electoral registers and on its ID card holder data base, informing them of their EU voting rights and of how to enroll on the European Parliament electoral register,” concluded Stephen Cachia.
Elections to the European Parliament will be held from 4 June to 7 June 2009 in the 27 member states of the EU, using varying election days according to local custom. 496 million Union citizens will elect 736 MEPs by proportional representation, topping the 2004 election which was the biggest trans-national election in history.
