Arnold Cassola, Alternattiva Demokratika -The Green Party Chairperson, warmly welcomed the initiative by the EU Commission to allow member states flexibility, as from 2011, when applying reduced VAT rates for some specific services on a permanent basis.
“It is very positive that the European Commission is proposing reduced VAT rates not only for energy saving materials, goods and services, such as the supply and construction of housing and relative services, including renovation, maintenance and cleaning, but also in the area of supply of restaurants and catering services, excluding alcohol”.
“In view of the diminished spending power of Maltese salaries and the spiralling levels of inflation and cost of living, Alternattiva Demokratika encourages the Maltese government to insist with the EU Commission on the possibility of immediately taking up this opportunity of VAT reduction”, concluded Prof. Cassola.
