Update: In a statement issued by Enemalta this afternoon, the corporation said a cable that had tripped at the distribution centre damaged its switch gear, which then caused the turbines at the Marsa power plant and the Phase 1 turbines at Delimara to trip and shut down, resulting in 55% of the island suffering an outage.
Enemalta said that engineers are currently starting up the various units and have already started restoring the supply to areas.
The corporation said that earlier this afternoon during reinforcing works being done at the Marsa South Distribution Centre, a fault occurred which led to an explosion in the distribution switchgear. Nobody was injured during the incident.
Power cuts across large areas of Gozo and Malta had been reported this afternoon, with power levels fluctuating during the last few hours.
In some areas of Gozo the power was off for just a few moments before returning.
