The Feast of the Epiphany was celebrated in the village of Xaghra this morning, with the triumphal entry of the Magi known as ‘La Cavalcata Dei Re Magi.’
The beautiful clear sunny weather drew large crowds to the village from all over the island, as well as the Maltese and tourists who arrived to watch this spectacular annual event.A couple depicting Mary and Joseph carrying the baby Jesus made their way through Victory Square to their place in front of the Basilica follwed by shepherds with sheep and a lamb. The shepherd paid homage to baby Jesus before taking his place alongside them on the Parvis. From three different streets, 8th September Avenue, Triq 28 t’April 1688 and Triq il-Knisja, the three Wise Men on horseback (the Magi) converged on Victory Square. They were accompanied by their pages carrying the three biblical presents, gold, incense and myrrh.
The Magi followed a moving star travelling overhead across the Square to arrive in front of the ‘Holy Family,’ where one by one they presented their gifts and also paid homage to Baby Jesus.
The Magi then attended the Celebration of the Eucharist in Xaghra Basilica, where they made the offerings at Mass.
This event was started for the first time on the island in 2010 and is organised by the Ghaqda Il-Milied fix-Xaghra, with the full collaboration of the Xaghra Archpriest Mgr Carmelo Refalo.
