On Sunday evening and Christmas Eve many hundreds of people visited the small village of San Lawrenz in Gozo to see it transformed into a cradle to welcome in a different way, the birth of Christ.
This year, the 43rd edition of the annual Christmas Pageant, ‘Twieled fi Djarna’ took the form of a completely new version for the occasion of the Year of Faith, its aim was to rekindle the light of the Babe of Bethlehem in every house in the village. For this special event, the village turned off electrical lighting and returned to days of old, to be lit by candle lights. The message conveyed was that of experiencing the light which illuminated the grotto of Bethlehem, two thousand years ago. “This same light will illuminates our houses, from where we will be asking Christ to illuminate our hearts and our homes,” the Parish said.
The crowds who followed the Pageant around the small community of San Lawrenz were able to relive the ‘Greatest Story Ever Told.’ The village houses opened their doors from which Biblical emerged, each character that had formed part of our history of salvation. The story of these biblical character mingled with that of each family. The culmination of the Pageant was the birth of Christ.
For some this was their first experience of the truly magical annual event that takes place in the small village. Young children were able to watch this special story that they had heard and read about, unfold in front of their eyes.
“Both performances encouraged Maltese and Gozitans alike to live the true spirit of Christmas. The same spirit of joy and happiness announced by the angels in Betlehem and lived by our forefathers.” the Parish concluded.
The Pageant was organised by the San Lawrenz Parish in collaboration with the San Lawrenz Local Council and National Lotteries Good Causes Fund.
