President agrees to dissolve Parliament on January the 7th

The Office of the President of Malta, this evening confirmed in a statement that President Abela has accepted a recommendation by the Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi, to dissolve Parliament on the 7th of January and for a general election to be held on th 9th of March.
The statement from the Office of the President of Malta is shown below:
“His Excellency Dr George Abela, President of Malta, this morning received the Honourable Prime Minister at The Palace, Valletta, for a meeting which lasted around 45 minutes.
“The Prime Minister recommended to The President the dissolution of Parliament and that dissolution should take place on the 7th January, 2013.
“The President, in accordance with his own deliberate judgment in accordance with Article 85(1)(a) of the Constitution of Malta, after considering that the Government of Malta cannot be carried out without a dissolution of Parliament and that a dissolution would be in the interests of Malta in accordance with Article 76(5)(c) of the Constitution of Malta, accepted to dissolve Parliament on the 7th January, 2013.
“The President of Malta, before arriving at his decision, held meetings with the Speaker of Parliament, the Leader of the Opposition and the Chief Electoral Commissione,.” the statement concluded.
