‘Libraries Day’ commemorated at the Gozo Public Library

The Malta Libraries Council (MLC), in cooperation with the Ministry of Education and Employment and the Schools’ Library Service organised a ‘Libraries Day’ on the 5th of December 2012.
The main objective of Libraries Day is to raise awareness of the importance of libraries and the role they have in the promotion of democracy and in providing access to information, education and recreation.
At the Gozo Public Library, Victoria a discussion was held attended by the Minister for Gozo, Giovanna Debono, with the theme ‘The book and writing.’ The discussion included a panel made up of Mr George N. Cassar, Mr Joe W. Psaila, Mr Joe Camilleri and Mons. Dr. Joe Bezzina.
The discussion was coordinated by Kav. Joe M. Attard. Following the discussion, the Minister inaugurated a plaque with the names of the librarians and officials who have been in charge of the library since 1853.
Also on the same day, the names of the Public Library in Vajringa Street and Gozo Lending Library in St Francis Square (both in Victoria) changed to National Library (Gozo) / Librerija Nazzjonali (Ghawdex) and Gozo Central Public Library / Librerija Pubblika Centrali ta’ Ghawdex respectively.
