UEFA Regions Cup tournament underway at Gozo stadiumUpdate: Gozo is currently hosting Group 5 of the Intermediary Round of the UEFA Regions Cup which started on Sunday, launched by Chris Said, Minister for Justice, Dialogue and the Family and continues until Thursday, the 18th of October.

UEFA Regions Cup tournament underway at Gozo stadiumThe Minister for Gozo, Giovanna Debono, this morning visited the Gozo Stadium and met with both the Russian team member as well as the Gozo team, together with the respective team officials.

The Minister also met with the UEFA delegate David McDowell of Slovenia, as well as Platon Bozatzidis of Greece, who is the official Referees Observer of the game.

The Gozo FA was given the opportunity to take part in the tournament following a request to MFA President Norman Darmanin Demajo. This is the second time, that Gozo has represented Malta in the UEFA Regions Cup after playing in Thessaloniki, Greece, in 1999, losing 0-4 to Zapadne Srbije of Yugoslavia, 0-6 to Israel and 2-8 to Macedonia of Greece.

Gozo’s opponents will be ATF Ialoveni of Moldova, Rinuži/Strong of Latvia and FC Olimp Moscow of Russia.

The team led by Eddie Vella played the first game on Sunday against Rinuži/Strong, against FC Olimp Moscow on Tuesday and ATF Ialoveni on Thursday.

In Sunday’s game, Gozo defeated Rinuzi / Strong of Latvia in the opening game from Group 5 of the Intermediary Round of the UEFA Regions Cup at the Gozo Stadium.

The Latvian side took the lead on 39 minutes thanks to Vitalijs Puzirevskis but four minutes in the second half, Michael Bezzina levelled matters. Four minutes in the second half, Kenneth Mercieca put the Gozitans ahead and Anthony Portelli converted a penalty to make it 3-1 on 78 minutes. Romans Simanovskis reduced the gap for Rinuzi / Strong two minutes from time.

Gozo will be in action once again today (Tuesday), facing FC Olimp Moscow of Russia.

Update: The end score for Tuesday’s match was 0-6 to FC Olimp Moscow of Russia. The other match played was betwwen Ialoveni and Rinuzi / Strong which was a 2-2 draw.

The players selected by Vella are: goalkeepers Mark Grima (Nadur), Adrian Parnis (Sannat); defenders Mark Buhagiar (Xaghra), Peter Buttigieg (Sannat), Joseph Cefai (Xewkija), Daniel Farrugia (Victoria Hotspurs), David Udoh Monday (SK Victoria Wanderers), Darko Stojanovic (Zurrieq); midfielders Michael Bezzina (Xaghra), Brian Meilak (Nadur), Jean Paul Mizzi (Kercem), Alex Simoncic (Nadur), Milos Stojanovic (Nadur), Elton Vella (Xewkija); forwards Rodney Buttigieg (Xewkija), Kenneth Mercieca (SK Victoria Wanderers), Anthony Portelli (Nadur) u Joseph Portelli (Nadur).

Although all matches are planned to be played at the Gozo Stadium, in case games on the last day are decisive Rinuži/Strong vs FC Olimp Moscow will be played at the Centenary Stadium, Ta’ Qali.

Referees for this tournament are Richard Trutz (Slovakia), Joao Carlos Santos Capela (Portugal) and Damir Batinic (Croatia) while the assistant referees are Ondrej Brendza (Slovakia), Nuno Filipe Santos Tomas Pereira (Portugal), Dalibor Conjar (Croatia) and Sammy Attard (Malta). Mario Apap (Malta) will be one of the fourth officials.
