Santa Marija Feast being celebrated in Victoria this week

This week celebrations are taking place for the feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin, also known as Santa Marija, whihc is being celebrated in Victoria.
The feast of Santa Marija on the 15th of August, is also being celebrated in seven villages in Malta, Attard, Dingli, Ghaxaq, Gudja, Mosta, Mqabba and Qrendi.
Both Maltese and tourists are expected to visit Gozo to enjoy the the festa celebrations this week, with local businesses, hotels and other types of holiday accommodation looking forward to the increase in business. This should be helped with the opening of the road from Mgarr harbour through to Victoria and the extra services being put on by Arriva both in Gozo and Malta to make the jouney easier for those who wish to visit the feast.
This year is also the the 70th anniversary of codename Operation Pedestal, the arrival of the Santa Marija convoy, which saved Malta from surrender when the allied convoy of food and fuel reached the islands on the 15th of August 1942, despite the heavy bombardment inflicted by German and Italian planes and the sinking of many of the ships.
A memorial in the shape of an anchor dedicated to the seafarers, is to be unveiled in front of our Lady of Liesse church,Valletta, tomorrow, Monday, the 13th of August to mark the 70th anniversary.
The ceremony, which will start at 7.00pm, has been organised by the Apostleship of the Sea, which commemorates this important anniversary every year.
