Gozo University Group, (GUG), has said that it condemns overtly offensive comments in the local media with regards to the recent NSO publication, Gozo In Figures, for expressing stereotypical views and overgeneralizations of the socio-economic situation of Gozitans. The Group said they would like to invite Maltese human rights and non-discrimination NGO’s to express their position on these comments.
Furthermore, GUG said that it expresses deep concern regarding the results of this study, which highlights the differences between the two islands.
In particular the group said that the result which states that Gozitan households have less disposable income is a major concern. This economic difference may result from various factors.
For example, the results of a a recent study carried out by GUG showed that:
1. 48% of the Gozitan students have suffered discrimination;
2. 93% believe that Gozo has unused potential and,
3. 54% believe that Gozo did not enjoy benefits from the European Union accession.
Finally, that Gozo has been developing a distinct character and identity over the years, as emphasized by the study, is not exactly new news.
GUG urged that this distinctiveness should not lead to discrimination but rather it must be taken into account while striving to develop the potential of Gozo in both economic and social terms.
