A Pastoral Message by H.L. Mons. Mario Grech, Bishop of Gozo, to Mothers on the occasion of Blessing of Babies in the Womb, which took place last Sunday, the 13th of May.
Today’s meeting in Ta’ Pinu Sanctuary reminds me of Mary’s visit to her relative Elizabeth. That day, as soon as Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, she was filled with the Holy Spirit, gave a loud cry and said: “… Look, the moment your greeting reached my ear, the child in my womb leapt for joy” (Luke 1,44).
Today, instead of Mary coming to your house, you came to hers! Today, as happened that day in Elizabeth’s house, the greeting of our Mother Mary comes to you here, too!
Today, with the intercession of Mary, the blessing of Jesus descends upon you, and the child in your womb leaps with joy! The movement in the womb is confirmation that what is in the womb is not a mass of cells but a human being, and therefore deserves respect for his/her dignity. Today, science speaks of a “competent foetus,” in the context that the human being has the capacity to experience feelings from the first weeks after conception! A modern psychiatrist says that the womb is not just the first crib for the baby but is the first world for him/her, so that the unborn child’s experience leaves a mark on his/her future personality.
In the same way that from this phase of your pregnancy your, or your husband’s, word offers calming comfort or agitation to your child, so too will the Good News of Christ that reaches you has the power to bless your offspring! I encourage you in this particular time to seek and reflect on the Word of God – it is the Word that causes the child to leap for joy.
I pray to Our Lady of Ta’ Pinu, Queen of the Family, to embrace you under her mantle. Today Sunday, May 13th, 2012, Mother’s Day.”
