The Gozo Football Marathon 2012, took place over the weekend at the Gozo Stadium in Xewkija. The event was organised by the Puttinu Cares Gozo Committee in aid of Puttinu Cares, the organisation that helps children and their families who suffer with cancer.
A Health Awareness Day was also held yesterday as part of marathon weekend, which gave the opportunity to visitors at the stadium to have tests for blood sugar, blood pressure, BMI and a weight check. The tests were carried out by a group of nursing students, who also provided information on weight reduction.
The Minister for Gozo, Giovanna Debono visited the stadium to see the various events taking place. She also met with the young participants in the Football Marathon, who came from various club nurseries.
The Puttinu Cares Cancer Support Group offers a holistic approach of care for families who have children suffering from cancer. Set up in 2002 by Dr Victor Calvagna and Rennie Zerafa, Puttinu Cares is a haven of solace for families whose children have been afflicted with cancer.
Currently this organisation is raising funds to build 12 apartments in the UK which will be only minutes away from the Royal Marsden Hospital, a specialist cancer treatment hospital.
This project is expected to cost a total of 3 million euros and is expected to accommodate some 400 Maltese and Gozitan patients for treatment in England each year.
