Programme of activities in celebration of Xaghra Day 2012

The Xaghra Local Council has announced a programme of activities to commemorate the 324th anniversary of the Xaghra Parish foundation. These will take place between Wednesday, the 25th and Sunday, the 29th of April 2012.
The Xaghra Parish was founded on 28th April 1688 through the Episcopal Decree Cum In Prima signed by Bishop Davide Cocco Palmeri. Together with Xaghra, three other Parishes were formed – these are the Parish of Saint Margaret in Sannat, the Parish of Nadur and the Parish of Zebbug Gozo.
The full programme of activities is as follows:
Wednesday 25th April:
9.00am: Celebration of Holy Mass for the elderly at the Day Care Centre in 28th April 1688 Street. A social activity follows. We encourage all the Xaghra elderly to participate.
Friday 27th April:
Today the Council celebrates ‘Library Day.’ The Xaghra public library will be open to the general public between 9am and 2pm for the benefit of the children and residents who would like to make use of its services. Between 9am and noon, educational visits will be made to the library by the children attending Xaghra Primary School.
Saturday 28th April: Commemoration of the 324th anniversary of Xaghra Parish foundation.
From 1pm onwards: Various football tournaments for children will be held in the main ground in 8th September Avenue. These tournaments are coordinated by the Xaghra United FC.
7.00pm: At the Collegiate Basilica of the Nativity of Our Lady, Mgr Archpriest Carmelo Refalo presides a Solemn Thanksgiving Mass with the participation of the Voci Angeliche Choir directed by Mrs. Grace Vella.
7.45pm: Festive band marches by the Victory Band of Xaghra from Victory Square to the Victory Philharmonic Society’s Club in Maria Bambina Street. At ‘Dun Alwig Camilleri’ Hall in the same club, a commemorative ceremony will be held. This includes reading of poems, presentation of educational material to children who are presently in Kinder II, musical pieces by the Victory Band and the award of the honour ‘Gieh ix-Xaghra 2012.’
Sunday 29th April:
Between 8.30am and 1.00pm: The 37th Edition of the Gozo Half Marathon in Xaghra organised by the Gozo Amateur Athletic Association in collaboration with the Xaghra Local Council. At the end of this annual sports event, the Mayor Joe Cordina distributes the awards to the winners and participants of the Marathon.
From 2.00pm onwards: Guided tours will be held at Ggantija Temples, Ta’ Kola Windmill and the Brockdorff Circle. Xaghra residents will be entitled to enter these historical sites free of charge on presentation of their ID card. These educational tours will be organised in collaboration with Heritage Malta.
