World class star for Teatru Astra’s opera leading roleWorld class singer Daniela Dessì will be taking the leading role in this October’s Teatru Astra production of Madama Butterfly, which is to be performed on the 25th and 27th of October as part of the 11th edition of Festival Mediterranea.

Ms Dessì, who has graced the stages of top theatres including La Scala in Milan, Teatro dell’Opera in Rome, the Arena in Verona, the Metropolitan in New York, the Lyric Opera in Chicago, Teatro Real in Madrid as well as in Tokyo, Japan and has sung under the direction of the most important orchestra conductors including Riccardo Muti, Claudio Abbado, James Levine and others, is currently considered as one of the opera world’s most important stars.

Her exceptional vocal talent, her technical prowess and her interpretation on stage have widely received enthusiastic reviews for her more than 70 operatic roles. She is known for her interpretation of Italian opera as well as concert arias, cantatas and oratorios by Mozart, Gluck, Handel and Vivaldi, with a repertoire that is as wide-ranging as her fascinating career has been for over thirty years since her debut in 1980.

Ms Dessì is considered as a soprano with a unique voice, characterized by an elegant style, exquisite phrasing and deeply expressive range. She has often managed to take Puccini’s already fine music into a further emotional dimension, with standing ovations and applauses often running into several minutes.

Until the end of February Ms Dessì successfully sang the part of Cio-cio-san in Puccini’s Madama Butterfly at Teatro dell’Opera in Rome, a role that she will be singing again at Teatru Astra as it opens its theatre season with the 11th edition of Festival Mediterranea.

Teatru Astra is proud to have managed to engage the services of this world-known star who will be singing in an opera in Malta for the very first time, an opportunity for the local audience to live first-hand a singular musical experience while Ms Dessì’s name serves to attract more cultural tourists for the island of Gozo and Malta in general.

Other artistes forming part of the opera cast will be announced at a later stage as will the full programme of events for this year’s edition of Festival Mediterranea.

Booking for the 25th and 27th of October performances of Madama Butterfly at Teatru Astra is open.

Patrons may wish to note that a special offer is currently on, with discounted tickets available for Tango Emociòn, a separate event taking place on Friday, the 26th of October, an original production bringing together song, dance and passion, with the participation of Romanian mezzo-soprano Oana Andra, an event which will be on European tour.
